NSW EPA Legislation — From 1 July 2026
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is introducing new legislation requiring high-volume food-waste-generating businesses to separate food waste from general waste streams. This applies to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, supermarkets, food manufacturers, and other large-scale food handlers.
Why It Matters
Reduce Methane Emissions
Food waste in landfill produces methane — a greenhouse gas 25x more potent than CO₂.
Reduce Contamination
Separating food waste improves the quality of other recyclable streams, increasing their value.
Cost Savings
Diverting food waste can significantly reduce your waste disposal costs and landfill levies.
Reputational Advantages
Customers and stakeholders increasingly favour businesses with strong environmental practices.
Sustainability Benefits
Demonstrate genuine commitment to environmental responsibility and circular economy principles.
Regulatory Compliance
Stay ahead of legislation and avoid potential penalties with proactive waste separation.
